Hi! After all those surveying adventures, we are now beginning our final assignment which is “…Library in Refence” We were assigned to design a small-scale library but in references to other building. It is a little complicated and because we didn’t know how to reference or so on we took a lecture from Namık Erkal. (This term we’ll have lots of lectures. How exciting!!) He had a presentation about references of course and he showed us some examples of building that are references to each other. There were references to Rome, references to other architectural buildings. As I understand reference is taking the idea or the appearance of something and use it in the context that you have. So, in my opinion it has some difficulties such as it might be plagiarism, or it can be caused some criticism as well.
(Kimbell Art Museum by Louis Kahn)
(Sarabhai House by Le Corbusier)
Examples above are given us during the presentation. These have some references from Rome.
Other important aspect of the assignment was taking quotation from a building. Quotation is taking directly some significant element or space and using it in your context. How it is different from reference is this time you are taking an element using it directly in your design without any interpretation.
If we go back to our assignment, we assigned to design a library but all we have should have to be in reference or quote from something. So, hard but enjoyable days are waiting for us😊 (I hope so…)
